A school field trip to the Pumpkin Farm
Dear Warsaw Montessori Family,
Each year the students of WMS take our annual trip to “Gospodarstwo Rolne” Majlert Farm. It is where we go to purchase our Halloween pumpkins and fresh fall produce. It is our annual tradition that brings great community spirit and a feeling of togetherness with nature.
The learning phases for going to the farm include, the harvest, life cycles of a plant, soil preparation, farm machinery and even cooking skills. The benefits for having these experiences go beyond the farm, but come back to the school and then home. The students can use their gained knowledge, attained on the farm and in our classrooms, to create vegetable gardens at school and home.
While visiting the farm, the children have the opportunity to work with some of the farm equipment. There are many types of such equipment, from hand tools and power tools to tractors and the countless kinds of farm implements that they tow or operate. Diverse arrays of equipment are used in both organic and nonorganic farming. The Majlert farm is an organic farm.
The final part of the trip is one of commerce. After a day working the farm and studying, the students visit the shop, located on the farm, to purchase the vegetables and a pumpkin. The final lesson, like all Montessori lessons are life-long skills. The management of money will be an asset to all our students.
